Therapist ethics

Wouldn't a therapist be required to disclose the truth to her client when she learns that the client is dating her son?

reply

Absolutely. It's called conflict of interest. They should have immediately transferred/referred the patient to another therapist.

Thanks. I would think so. Obviously the writers took some liberties here, as did Meryl Streep's character!

I thought that scenario seemed very unlikely to happen, but it did make for a fun movie!

I'm wondering though if there was a little room for judgment there. Maybe it was just for the movie's plot, but Lisa did go to see her own therapist and explain that she was trying to stand by her patient, who would probably have liked to have stuck with her. I think Lisa was hoping the relationship was going to peter out quickly, lol, and no one would be the wiser. Although, yes, that probably flew in the face of ethics, it might have been one of those "just do it and ask forgiveness later if necessary" sort of calls.
