Watching this for the first time

I think its a very funny show (thus far), with the exception of (and to my great surprise) Michael. I just didn't find Steve Carell to be funny at all. He is just awkward, annoying and stupid. I love every other character. So far I feel like Michael's shtick would be better relegated to a smaller supporting part. The fact that he takes up so much time being an embarrassing asshole is unfortunate.

Are you watching from the beginning and if so which episode are you on?

reply

I just finished the first season. So I understand my view can change given there are 6 more seasons with him.

There is definitely a shift in season 2 for the better. You'll see what I'm talking about with season 2 episode 1 (The Dundies). The show did a really good job of pushing that character to the brink of unbearableness and then reeling him in just enough.

The supporting characters are definitely what drives the show and you'll see more of them and each get to develop their own personalities starting in season 2 as well. Interested to hear your thoughts as you get further in!

reply

Hey, thanks. I really appreciate the constructive feedback. I will return with thoughts once I delve in.

Excellent!

To me, the show becomes a real joy at season four and becomes a little jokier, but not too much. Sometimes the cringe is too much for me as well so the jokes balance it out much better.

reply

As with Ricky Gervias in the original Office series, the fact that he's a cringeworthy asshole is the whole point of it. I'm surprised you don't see that.

reply

I didn't see the original UK version, so why would I see that? And it's not that I don't get the embarrassment humor aspect. I get that is who the character is. I said I don't find it all that funny so far. Its the amount of time lingering on his awkwardness that doesn't do it for me.

Hey Michael Scott, watcha gonna do, watcha gonna do make our dreams come true!

reply

In a show with a lot cringe-worthy moments, this is probably top of the list. So much so that if I'm rewatching it, I just skip right over that episode lol.

reply

Yeah, that was a hard episode to watch. I think the only one that tops it is the dinner party episode. Jan was a piece of work.

reply

Haha there are some cringe-worthy moments there for sure but I love that episode. Particularly when Dwight shows up with his date and you can hear Pam say "Awesome!" It's those odd bonding moments between characters who don't often bond that I really found myself appreciating.

I'll also say in the Scott's Tots episode I did like Michael and Erin's interactions very much.

reply

I find the Andy-Erin plotline to be top notch cringe to the put where I fast forward through it. Not all of it, but maybe 3/5 of it. I can't handle watching two people who are that ineffectual.

It’s so curious that some of the viewers , as well as you, dislike “Michael “ and Steve Carell.
He is an amazing character! So damn funny . It is a dead pan humor for sure , but Carell does this so well in this show.

Season 1 Michael is not the Michael Scott of the later seasons - it's a completely different character. Watch at least until the end of season 3, and if you still hate him, then that hatred has validity, but if you hate Michael Scott solely based on Season 1, you're not being realistic or fair, and your opinion if not based on the REAL Michael Scott of later seasons.
