The only reason some non-asians will not like this film...

Because it doesn't show Americans or Brits whoopin ass. Every single "Great" War movie in one way or another features American or British soldiers whoopin ass.

For once, this film flipped it and showed the realness of war and showed it wasn't all men being men and every soldier being a hero. You could feel the action and intensity. The film was unbelievable and probably joint top with Full Metal Jacket as my favourite war films.

Although this movie had some good scenes, overall it was pretty bland and corny. Not because of the idiotic assumption that americans and brits only want to see ass kicking.

Laugh and the world laughs with you. Weep and you weep alone.

Exactly. The original poster's assumption about westerners is bigoted and just plain wrong. Starting with the fact that westerners who'd watch a subtitled korean film are generally the opposite of that childish typecast. Grow up c0ckhead.

Other people make good war movies too. Try to see "Captain Conane" about French soldiers in WWI. Its about a unit of men sent out at night to infiltrate enemy lines and kill or capture enemy doldiers and bring back information. But as the war is winding down they are an embarrasement because of their ways.

Another good film is also French called "A Very Long Engagement" about a woman determined to find out what happened to her fiance. She refuses to accept the official version of how he died or even if he died.

She hunts down soldiers who were there in the trenches and pieces the story together.

...IM not Asian and I like this movie.

That may be true of some viewers, but the numbers don't seem to indicate that that is the case. Not on IMDB at least.

If you look at the breakdown of voting history you'll see that almost 3600 US voters gave the movie an average vote of 8.0 and 9200 non-US voters gave it an 8.1. There's not much of a difference there.

I also don't think that the characterization of every "great" war movie being about Americans or Brits "whoopin ass" is accurate either. Das Boot is generally considered to be one of the greatest war movies ever made and is about a German U-Boat crew, go figure.

Not even remotely true.

Agree there. Saving Private Ryan's Omaha Beach scene showed hundreds of the US soldiers being slaughtered by German machine gunners, mortar and artillery. The Germans also wiped out most of the paratroopers in the Battle of Ramelle as well through the use of tanks and a flak gun.

Oh thanks for clearing this up for me. I thought I didn't like it because of the cliche overload. And because it sucked.

reply

thank you! I wouldn't go as far as saying it sucked, but the cliche and melodramatic hero scenes definitely ruined parts of the movie. If only they stuck to realism without Hollywood morality

This movie was beyond corny, in the best pearl harbor way.

Non-asians? Nice sweeping statement there, why would I, as a Swede, give a damn about whether or not the soldiers are yanks, brits or korean? The movie was pretty good but nothing spectacular, around 7/10, way to many hollywood-ish cliche moments.
