dumb 'yank' question -- long cigarettes

i was wondering what were the really long cigarettes some of them were smoking (the Tommy Hatcher character had one in the first encounter with Bovver at the cafe in 'enemy territory') ... were they pre-rolled cigarettes? or hand-rolled? or were they joints (marijuana)? i saw one in "The Firm" where the grandson had given his grandfather a marijuana joint and it was rolled like that ... but in this movie it was never stated or alluded to what they were smoking and they seemed to be very public about it (not the typical situations you'd just pull out a joint and start smoking it) or maybe there are looser marijuana laws in Britain tho i always thought they were similar to the uptight laws we have here in the states

thanks for any info :)

take care,
cormac
