I had never heard of this movie, but it was referred to as Tom Cruise's "pet project" in this article -- http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13904967/:

To add to his woes, Cruise's pet project at Paramount —“Ask the Dust” starring Colin Farrel and Salma Hayek flopped barely breaking $1 million worldwide. Yet Cruise still brings home one of Hollywood's biggest paychecks.

Tom Cruise did this for director Robert Towne,with whom he worked with in many of his movies back in the 80's like Days Of Thunder. Both Cruise and Towne wrote the screenplay of this film.
