'Seraphim Falls' or '3:10 to YUma'

Is the original "Seraphim Falls" a tougher & grittier chase?

Fascinating question with tons of eager responses by numerous people on this board. Fail.

They burned Sosobra, God of bad luck!

Seraphim Falls is a far better film than this ridiculous, poorly written movie.

*beep* no. Seraphim Falls was downright retarded. It starts out pretty good, but then turns into surrealist arthouse trippy crap. While this movie had it's problem (For example, Batman shot like 4 dude with a double barreled shotgun before reloading) Seraphim Falls was just a giant circle jerk for writes/directors trying to be 'deep' but failing miserably.

I agree. I keep reading on these boards about people loving Seraphim Falls and that confuses the heck outa me. Like the above poster said, it started out good, then went into a confusing-wanna-be-deep-pos movie. 3:10 to Yuma is by FAR a more classic, and better, western film.

They both pale in comparison to the real classic Westerns.

Very true...by the way mgtbltp? What would you consider to be the last classic western? Classic for me would be anything before Pale Rider, but then again, I'm older than some.

Classic in style? Or simply when it was filmed? Using filmed as the rule/guideline, the last classic for me was Once Upon A Time In The West in 1968. Sergio Leone made some awful movies, and yes, I'm talking about the "Man With No Name" trilogy, but he put together a masterpiece with OUATITW. True Grit in 1969 is close, but to me it's not really a western in the classic sense.

Using style as the guide, I think there have been 3 more recent classics; Unforgiven in 1992, Open Range in 2003, and yes, 3:10 to Yuma. Maximus and Batman were excellent, as was Ben Foster. This remake was better than the original, a rarity in Hollywood. What's kinda sad is that it took a Kiwi and a Welshman for us Americans to get a decent western. And the reason they didn't just shoot Ben Wade is because the railroad wanted him alive.

BTW, Seraphim Falls was awful. Overly simplistic plot that completely dissolved in the last 30 minutes into some artsy good vs. evil parable. I kept hearing all these great things about it, but not only did it not live up to those expectations, I can't figure out what generated all the hype in the first place. The guy's on the run, yet somehow managed to create some extremely complex and deadly traps that his pursuers just happen to run right into. Yeah, sure. He had plenty of time for that.

The Long Riders comes to mind.

I actually like both films. Both of my favorite actors are in each. Liam Neeson in Seraphim Falls and Russell Crowe in 3:10 to Yuma. But in my opinion I think Seraphim Falls is a little bit of a darker movie than 3:10 to Yuma. But 3:10 to Yuma is better in my opinion. But both are excellent movies in their own way.
