Actually, back then men who were gut shot were usually left for dead. Survival rate was pretty much zero. Even assuming they didn't bleed to death, infection from leaky bodily fluid was a death sentence.

Emmett Dalton was shot 23 times in a failed bank robbery and even survived!

and guns back then didn't have the same power as they do now.
