I have a few questions about Ben and Dan

My hearing is not very good: when Ben was choking Dan what was the explanation Dan gave regarding his military service and the loss of his leg or foot?
Also
what was the significance of the crucifix that was embedded in Ben's gun handle? Other than he may have been a "believer".

What was the significance of the medallion/chain that Dan would brandish every now and then?

" Made It Ma... Top - O' - The - World! "

Dan confesses to Ben that he isn't a war hero. His foot was shot off by one of his own men during the only battle he has ever seen when they were in retreat. Then Dan says: "You start telling that story to your boy..." implying that he does not want to lose face in front of his son/s.
The hero-worshipping relationship William Evans/Ben Wade plus this confession by a distressed father makes Ben Wade reconsider.

As far as the crucifix on the handle is concerned: that's why the weapon is nick-named "Hand of God" (one of the Deputies calls it that early on).
