Randa

This might not make a difference to some people, but it really bugs me when they make characters who are supposed to be immigrants not have the proper accents. Randa didn't have a foreign accent half the time, and she pronouned the word "hijab" (the cloth head covering) in the "American" way! Why would anyone from the Middle East suddenly come to America and pronounce an Arab word with an American accent? That was really stupid and made her seem like she wasn't really from the Middle East.

Also, if Arab parents are supposed to be strict and old-fashioned, why would they let their daughter spend so much time unsupervised at friends' houses? And more importantly, traditional Muslim parents would be too ashamed if their daughter was sexually harrassed and would not allow her to go public with it.

Out of curiosity, how would you (assuming you're not American) pronounce "hijab"?

reply

Well, I am American (born in America and lived here all my life), but my parents are from India...though we're not Muslim, the languages are similar, so I know that "hijab" is actually pronounced "hee-jahb", like when a doctor tells you to say "aah" or in "baa baa black sheep", and not "hee-jab" like taking a "jab" at someone. Also, the stress should be on the second syllable and not the first.

Hope that helps! :)

I suppose this Arab family in question, in the movie, would be quite liberal moving to the U.S. and all.

Exactly Especially since the father said something about pursuing the American Dream....... whatever that is... LOL

Obviuously if the parents were that traditional they wouldn't have moved to the U.S from the middle-east. Don't stereotype people, not all Arab people would be ashamed if their daughter was sexually harrassed, especially Arabs living in the u.s
