the ending (spoilers, obviously)

I found this movie incredibly intriquing. Found it while channel surfing and never got to finish watching it. When I finally watched the end of the movie, it killed it. This movie was so dark, and powerful. All of these plans that Evan's character had were so... genius. Then in the end, it all seemed immature. She did all this over.. a boy? Her character is made out to be so profound and larger than life, and I understand she's a human being and she has mental conflictions, but a BOY? Sigh. It just turned me off so much, to think so much during this movie and for it to end up merely juvenile. What do you think?

That wasn't the sole motivation. She also did it to be famous (she wouldn't have gotten the TV role otherwise) and get back at some of the other characters like Anderson and Kline.

Number 1, I order you to go take a number 2.

***spoilers... duh***

i think thats sort of the point though. throughout the movie, kimberly seems beyond her years, shes extremely intelligent and knows how to manipulate those around her, and understands how the adult world functions. you nearly forget that she is still a child! you have to remember shes ultimately a 15 year old girl. regardless of how genius she is, shes still a teenage girl! everyone knows how intense things seem to be in the teenage world, and how everything is a life/death situation, every situation seems like the most important thing in the world. she still lacked certain maturity. shes was rejected by people she truely loved (her mother/her bf) and she takes her rage/jealousy out on britney, her best friend. it happens all the time (though obviously not to this extent) within circle of friends in the teen world. i think the ending was perfect, so many issues/themes are conveyed on so many levels.

i actually had a question about *SPOILER!* randa's suicide. i knew that she killed herself so i went out of the room coz i didnt want to watch it (lol, pathetic i know!) anyway, i know before she killed herself she wrote something on the board (in arabic im assuming). did they translate what she wrote, was it important? and was there any significance in her removing her head scarf, like that she lost faith in her faith?

reply

*SPOILERS*

Im not sure about the meaning of taking off the headscarf but the message she wrote on the board was:
'WE ARE ALL SINNERS'

This is old news but I totally agree with pinkpepperoni .

On top of that, I don't think the whole plot had much to do with losing her boyfriend even though she thought that. I think she was a troubled, angry, sad and lonely fifeteen year old. She has lost everyone she cares about (mom, brother, bf) and the people in her life can't be trusted. On top of that, she has been labeled a slut for having anal sex with a guy she was dating. WHen you are fifeteen that is a major slur. The idea that Brittney was somehow more "pure" outraged her. I think she revealed her true motives when she told Brittney that she made her into a slut like her. She was angry at the world and she took it out on the golden girl. Like pinkpepperoni said, its not uncommon.

I also think the film goes a long way to explaining her motives by drawing a comparison to the teen killer on tv at the end. Why do teens like that kill? What are their motives for hatred? Its usually a misdirected anger at the world at large. You can't pin point the moment that made them "go bad". What she did was really a more complex version of what that kid did. And I don't think even she understands why she was doing what she did.

The movie has moments that go to explain what is going on. But I think they fail by forcing it into too much of a satire but also a type of character study. They don't really commit either way. But Evan Rachel Wood does a great job of conveying those moments of innocense, frustration, anger and confusion all at once.

When I first watched it and found out it was over a boy, I remember thinking "Oh come on, couldn't you have thought of anything more original?" But then I thought about it and I thought it made perfect sence - basically waht pinkpepperoni wrote =).

I think from the court case when Brittany confesses onwards, the movie kinda jumps the shark. I still like it, especially the end scene where she's channel-hopping; but the plot doesn't seem so tight after the court part.
And I didn't like the boy motivation, either.
