Question about the ending?
Why did Ron Livingston's character (the English teacher) wife leave him at the end even though he was completely innocent?

shareYeah I was wondering that too, there didn't seem to be any continuity behind it, perhaps complications arose where they realise they didn't love each other through the whole hardship or some *beep* but I think more than anything it was just to show all of the damage the girl did so she could feel guilty at the end. Horrible ending. An interesting commentary on the world the liberals created, a girl can let out a racial slur and make statutory accusations and get famous.
shareThanks for your comment! I agree, that's the world the liberals created and we have to survive in! A better ending (and this is what I was hoping for) would be that the English teacher blow that bitch away with a magnum 45 then kill himself. That would show real damage from such a false and serious accusations!
shareI think she is a very interesting character, and even more so because she is in the movie so little. In the birthday dinner scene, we see that she is possibly spoiled/conceited (she said she was starting to worry that he didn't get her anything, and then she seemed disappointed that it was just a little skirt). She also is apparently distant from her husband, since she was ackward about changing in front of him.
When she begins her schoolgirl act, she seemed to think it was a great joke at first. She thought that the similarity of her new skirt to the uniform skirts was a coincidence. The first tip off that it was on purpose should have been the 'naughty' essay he had her read, however it is unclear what her reaction to that essay was.
Assuming she didn't read too much into it at the time, we have to wonder what her thoughts were later at the trial when it becomes a piece of evidence. After all, schoolgirl fantasies are fairly common, but fantasies about a specific schoolgirl, especially when she is claiming sexual molestation, would be hard to take as a wife. She actually would have been an invaluable witness for the prosecution had she come forward with her story.
So, based on what I have assumed above from her character, she is a woman who is self-centered, with a husband who is only sexually aroused when she is pretending to be someone else. This seems to be plenty of reason for her leaving him. It's not because of the girls' accusation, but because of the origin of the letter which came out during the trial.
Eleanor, I think you nailed it perfectly! The birthday dinner scene was the tip off of to her character. Also I noticed in the same scene, when she knew she was arousing her husband with her little dance and he began to touch her she didn't seem pleased by his foreplay. A worried and confused look was on her face. I don't know why I didn't pick that up?
You have keen insight and I really do appreciate your explanation and taking the time to clear this up for me!
I disagree completely. I don't think she was confused at all... I think she knew exactly what she and he were doing. She knew that he got her the skirt because it turned him on (it was pretty obvious that he was lying when he acted like he didn't realize there was a resemblance to the school uniforms) that's why she added the socks herself and literally said "I'm a naughty little schoolgirl..." and started spanking her butt. She was intentially trying to arouse her husband with her little dance so why would she be unpleased by his foreplay? There was no worried or confused look on her face because then why was she going along with the roleplay with him? I think the look on her face that you saw was that of the alcohol starting to affect her... remember she downed the whole glass of wine right before she got up from the table.

They were such a distant couple. During the birthday dinner scene I thought they had just being dating a while just because there was the awkwardness about the whole relationship. It was only when he said "we are married for Christ sake" that I realised lol. I think that really highlights the distance int heir relationship.

I think we are supposed to assume that after the wife hears the exact essay she read to him read out in court she is on to her husband's perversion.
