Firefly has tons of rewatchability, this film has little

There is little mystery to the film, stuff that is explained isn't bad, in fact the movie is decent enough for a scifi flick, but the tv series had something special. Depth, mystery, prostitutes. Did you notice how the film ditched a lot of the salacious western elements? Something that also made the series more interesting. And who the hell wants to keep watching Wash and Shepherd die?

It's been a while, but what was the reason for movie instead of second season?

Is rewatchability a word? I don't care, I'm using it anyway.

The show was cancelled.

You are sin.

I find rewatchability a great concern. I've rewatched Serenity numerous times.

In the kingdom of the blind, you're the village idiot.

reply

Well Wiki says the series was canceled after only 11/14 episodes were aired, not enough viewers I guess.
But later the DVD collection sold well.
So they decided to make a movie! It would have been stupid to make a 2nd season after the first one was canceled ;)
I guess they hoped that it could become a success in cinemas as a sci-fi movie, leaving out the western.

And for some strange reasons, the movie has a really high rating here. But I agree with you, I don't feel the need to watch it again. As some others stated in the reviews, the plot is not good.

reply

I disagree completely. I find Serenity to have virtually the same re-watchability as Firefly. Yes, it has certain tonal and stylistic differences and didn't have the same amount of time so it had to be a bit less subtle, but this was to be expected in making the leap to the big screen. And I thought Joss did a great job. It still very much feels like Firefly. And if anything, I find it a lot easier to rewatch the film when I want to get a quick "Firefly-fix" since it's a breezy, fast-paced good time and I don't always have the time to devote to re-watching the series.

I've always viewed the film as more or less just the climax or a belated "third act" to wrap up the major storylines of the series, so I don't mind that it's slightly more action orientated, fast-paced and a bit more "in your face."

And FURTHERMORE, this is my signature! SERIOUSLY! Did you think I was still talking about my point?

reply

I think both Firefly and Serenity have great re-watch value. Sadly, the show was cancelled and Ron Glass (Shepherd Book) is no longer with us.

reply

Its sad that Ron Glass is dead now, however I dont think theres a chance they will redo Firefly with the original cast at this point anyway.

Besides, how would that work ? They already killed Wash and Book, Inara left them, and the rest - has aged very visibly at this point.

I think/hope sooner or later Joss will return to Firefly but I'm not sure what he will do about it.

reply

Well, Inara is back on the ship by the end of Serenity.

In any case, even if Joss and the cast never return to Firefly, we had a great series and movie to enjoy.

Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead.

reply

Perhaps they could recast the role of Shepherd Book.

reply

"And who the hell wants to keep watching Wash and Shepherd die?"

They only die once (each) in the movie.

reply

Yeah, but you have to see it again every time you re-watch the movie.

reply

I find bigger problems with excessive rewatching of most movies, mainly knowing the diaologue inside out , and every other detail.

reply

I like the movie as a bigger-budget spectacle. There's lots of entertaining action throughout. And the visual quality is much more appealing than the series.
The TV show is kind of hit or miss to me, and tends to drag in a lot of spots.

reply

I rewatch the series then I rewatch the film so I guess I find it all highly rewatchable. If they'd made another movie I'd probably tag that on to.
