As the previous response said, yeah, actors like Jarmusch. He brings out the best in them. His movies are unconventional, so actors get to do things they wouldn't otherwise. How often has Cate Blanchett played a part like Shelly? I bet it was hard work and that she absolutely loved doing it. I gather a lot of the dialog was improv, which is a skill that good actors are proud of and enjoy, but of course almost never get a chance at in movies.
And the spread out schedule -- well, I think not so much that he got actors before they were well known, but that he wasn't on a deadline and so he could film an episode any time he and the actors were free. The total lack of extras made it even easier. And I read that most of the vignettes were done in a day or two, in part because the actors did a lot of improv, so that's another factor. He could almost walk down the street, meet a few actors, take them home and do a shoot. OK, that makes it sound easy, and of course it's not.
