The real reason this movie doesn't make sense.

Depp's character does not seem the type to stand up and fight the power. All we see him doing is drink and talk with his bum room mates. Yeah he wants to write an article about the poverty in Puerto Rico and we see him taking photos but it does not explain his desire to "Go after the Bastards" in the end. If anything those bastards helped him out of a few jams while he was in Puerto Rico and he should just be gracious.

Besides all the trash in your post, I'll just pick this single part to rebut...

Those "bastards" he should be grateful to for helping him out of a "few" jams were protecting their investment, period. They weren't doing some kind of altruistic favors to Kemp, but were simply protecting the man who would be their propagandist, in turn, making them lots and lots of money, illegally.
