Johnny Depp - You really wish you were a man of substance like Hunter.

But you're not, and now you're doing more of his work after his death, and you know he probably would have slapped you for it.

Go retire and live happily off the money you made for doing crappy movies and always remember that you have overshadowed the good work you did with the 7 times quantity of bad work you've done since then.

Regarding the title of your post: Only if by "substance" you mean "drugs" and not over-hyped intellect.

I agreed. After watchin dis movie, it made me realized how lil talent Depp has. I mean I see Jack Sparrow in all his performancez now. And 1s where he tries 2 hide it like in Public Enemies, he is so flat and borin. da guy is all lookz. i remembered watchin him on Letterman and he cant even talk like a normal person...all quiet and nuttin 2 say. basically no substance.

Not only did Depp work and live with Hunter S. Thompson during the making of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the two became very good friends during this period. Depp also paid for HST's funeral in which his ashes were shot out of a cannon shaped as the Gonzo fist. He also penned the very production of this film and fought to get it made. So, uh, yeah. Johnny has pretty good substance in my book. Watch the documentary called Gonzo for more insight.

well hes an actor so we obviously talkin bout his actin. wat has he done dat is note-worthy besidez Capt Jack Sparrow?

reply

Nice spelling, guy.
1. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
2. Public Enemies
3. Blow
4. Donnie Brasco
5. Ed Wood

Are you dealing in beans, or what? Should I keep going? Guy has a pretty solid track record with those 5 flicks. His "actin" was pretty spot-on in those 5 films alone.

most of these filmz r quite forgettable and wud not be on any1's listz. i mean, im glad u enjoyed them but i bet none of them r even in da all-time imdb list.

i mean just look at #2? pitiful. dat movie is just pitiful and he made dillinger into prolly 1 of da most boringest characterz ever. he and bale had really lackluster performancez and only cortilard saved da movie into somethin dat is somewat watchable. it wuz also filmed in horrible digital and u can see some of da imagez pixelate and da sound wuz just awful.

I recall on the Public Enemies board you saying that you watched the film more than once. How many times did you end up seeing it before it dawned on you how bad it was?

Dude, learn to type or don't post. Stating facts and ridiculing you are 2 different things. FACT: He's made films worth repeat viewings.

comparing his movies this century.

bad/awful movies with Depp in it:
1. alice in wonderland (amazing disney cartoon, amazing book, BAD movie and Depp looked like a pedophile creep)
2. the tourist (Depp and Jolie had ZERO chemistry and the story was a snore.)
3. charlie and the chocolate factory (depp looks like a pedo again.)
4. sweeney todd (boring.)
5. the libertine (awful and i love period movies... this one was a YAWNER.)
6. secret window (bad)
7. once upon a time in mexico (bad!)
8. from hell (awful!)
9. the man who cried (snore...)

good/ok movies with Depp in it:
1. chocolat (beautiful)
2. pirates (not great, not awful.)
3. blow (awesome!!!)

so so... semi boring:
1. public enemies
2. once upon a time in mexico

So quiet people are not normal?

Depp's career didn't start in 2003.

Edward Scissorhands
Benny and Joon
Ed Wood
Dead Man
Donnie Brasco
Fear and Loathing
Blow
Finding Neverland
etc.

how about whats eating gilbert grape? a nightmare on elm street?

reply

"nightmare on elm street"? it's about defending his acting abilities, not running down all minor appearances.

reply

no, normal ppl r social and like 2 talk. hes a bit of a recluse. but lets say hes not too social

none of those moviez r noteworthy and r quite forgettable. u can argue scissorhandz but dat wuz more a comin out 4 tim burton. ed wood has a cult followin but its more da film itself, not depp dat made da movie worked. donnie brasco is a good film but nowhere near da level of godfather or other gangster flix.

again, depp only broke out bec of jack sparrow otherwise he wud only be considered a b-lister

michaelflatley_clone ... your writing is pure piss in my eyes!

No lie. Dude, are you trying to be clever/ironic or what? I know kids with better diction than you. As for your post, you seem to have missed the point entirely.

Do you talk like you write? It's very annoying.

Hear hear. I spent many years loving his films (we're a similar age). And I did laugh in the various Pirates (didn't see them all) but I also now see Jack in all the roles. His speech is indeed sometimes very mumbled, in the film it's particularly bad. Maybe that's what happens when you marry the ditsyest ever French celebrity. He certainly can still 'look' very cute, in this he had on layers and layers of make-up, probably more than in the Pirates... to make him look young and tanned and toned.

It is a sad state of affairs when one loses an idol from our youth. :(

***So I've seen 4 movies/wk in theatre for a 1/4 century, call me crazy?**

reply

Johnny Depp is a sell out. I hate him whenever I see him in trailers and on tv. He was a decent actor some years ago but he is useless now.

Something needs to pay rent.

ive had a little bit too much to think tonight

reply

I haven't seen it yet (maybe my opinion will change when I do), but Johnny and Hunter were great friends and him making this movie was a tribute to Hunter. It hit so many snags in the production process that I figured it actually being made had a lot to do with Johnny. Maybe I'm mistaken.
