Best Picture

Many have said this is one of the worst films to win the Best Picture Oscar. Is it really that bad? It has a 7.8 on IMDB so it can't be that terrible.

reply

Yes, I think it is that bad. Most of the dialogue and situations felt contrived to make a point. The characters' behaviors were exaggerated and unrealistic to make points about race, but I think a better movie would have made its points in a more subtle way. I don't think Crash should have been one of the Best Picture nominees that year, let alone the winner.

I like the movie but I still agree with everything else you said. Almost every single discussion or interaction involves racism, bigotry or prejudice. It hits you over the head with it so hard.

"Crash" is a quality drama in the spirit of "Grand Canyon" (but darker) about the dynamics of relationships in a racially diverse society (i.e. Los Angeles).

Most of those who have been suspiciously hostile toward it are whiney gays mad that their favored movie didn't win that (poor babies, wah).

It's not that bad. Take a chance and watch it--see what you think.

It's an excellent movie, although it makes many people uncomfortable. I saw all the contenders for the Oscar that year, and I fully agree with the win.

It’s pretty good. The multiple storylines are a bit confusing, but it all ties up at the end. There was some backlash against it for winning the Oscar rather than Brokeback Mountain, so I think a lot of bad audience reviews come from that. At the time, it was well reviewed and did well at the boxoffice.

I watched again recently and the film has more to say about police and race relations today than 14 years ago. It doesn’t take any sides. No character is portrayed as either all good or all bad. Rather, it depicts that our anger, fear, and resentment can be overcome.

Very tragic in spots; uplifting in others.

I love the movie. It was a powerful film, and it really made you think. What I took from it was everyone was capable of racism, and every person is capable of good and bad deeds. I have no problem with it winning Best Picture.

I think it just got cool to pick on Crash because so many people were rooting for Brokeback Mountain, mainly for social progress purposes, and Crash took the full wrath of all the angry and bitter Brokeback fans.

This was nowhere near as ridiculous as Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan. Now THAT was laughable.

The film itself is pretty preachy in parts, and I think it's probably one of the worse Best Picture winners ever. Blame the voter's for that not the film. Brokeback Mountain should have won. It's not the first time Oscar voter's have messed up.

It's good solid film with a fantastic Matt Dillon performance. If it didn't win the Oscar's I think time would have been more kind to it.

It is not anything like that bad. Personally speaking it is (and was) not my personal choice for the win that year (both "Good Night and Good Luck" and "Munich" would have been more deserving) but the hostility towards this movie and the obsession with its win is quite bizarre.
