Explain the DA scene with the black cop being shot?

What were they trying to do there? Who were they covering up ? the white cop shooting a black cop or was the black cop dealing too. I missed something. It seems like there was more to it than a murdered black cop.

Not sure what scene you are asking about. Give me more info, how many minutes into the movie? Which characters? I'll re-play my DVD and let you know what my interpretation is.

The scene where Don Cheedle is talking to the lawyer in the courthouse or whatever government building just before Brandon Fraser makes his announcement to the press that the Black officer was shot by the White detective. It sounded like they were setting up the white cop for something he didnt necessarily do, like the black cop wasnt clean or something like he was doing something illegal. They also say the white cop killed three others. This certainly wasnt shown or talked about at the crime scene.

Yeah, that's pretty well it. I just re-watched the scene from about 1:06 to about 1:13 on the DVD. A white cop who had already had a questionable record just shot and killed a black cop. The DA's office wanted to make an example of this white cop but Waters (Cheadle) wasn't sure, it seemed the evidence pointed to the dead black cop as being involved with illegal drugs. He was doing his best to do the right thing, not just what the DA's office wanted. In the end he was convinced to compromise his principles and go along, even though he knew it was probably wrong.

To me this scene was used to dramatize what kinds of things really do happen in big city law enforcement. Judging from the news over the years I suspect it is more true than fiction.

TX explained it well. The white cop had a history of shooting black guys, though. In real life, cops rarely discharge their weapons.
