A relic?
Next to many other obvious reasons why this was cancelled(mediocre humor, weak cast, the legacy of friends etc.), I believe an important factor was Joey premiering at a time when the sitcom genre was undergoing serious transitions.
The last decade we've seen
The rise of mockumentary( Office, curb your enthousiasm, reno 911, more recent parks and recreation and modern family).
More offbeat, absurd humor ( Malcolm in the middle, Scrubs)
And recently, something that I percieve to be a gender based split in comedy. On the one hand the bromance, over-the-top, fratboyesque shows like: It's always sunny in Philadelphia, Workaholics, the league and community. On the other hand the more offbeat social-relationship shows with quircky female leads like: New girl, Awkward, suburgatory, don't trust the bitch...
Joey was about as standard a sitcom as they come and it was one of the last. Two and a half men is the only regular sitcom still going strong that comes to mind( from a ratings perspective, the show is utter crap IMO and most voters on IMDB and metacritic agree). The big bang theory and How I met your mother are also doing great and they're fairly standard sitcoms but still a tad different IMO.
Anyway, just an observation that came to mind a while ago. Thought I'd post it here, seems fitting...
Thoughts and comments welcome.
