The Stephanie character...

Is a stupid whorebag. I love this movie but she is a freaking sleazeball--she starts effing some random dude the night she meets him and has him spending time with her daughter, tucking her into bed and referring to him as "Uncle Jack." Creepy. She pretty much deserved what she got.

"My Rowsdower has come for me!"

reply

all of the characters are kind of messed up in the head a little except for Maya. miles is a depressed underachiever, jack is a horn dog suffering from mid-life crisis, and stephanie is promiscuous and naive. maya is the only one with her head on straight, despite the fact she may be a little overly passionate about wine making, lol.

reply

I loved that there was no explanation for Stephanie being Asian but having a white mother and a black daughter.

reply

What explanation is there.....her mom was married to an Asian guy and Stephanie had a kid with a black guy a grand ol melting pot!

It's weird that they made her mother 100% white. I have half-asian kids and they don't even look asian. I'm blonde and blue-eyed and my kids have light brown hair and brown eyes.

It would only make sense if her mother had adopted her.

reply

I too felt Steph was skanky but then felt sorry for her. She is a single mom, and watching "Uncle Jack" playing w her kid at the arcade, and acting like a father figure to her, and poor Steph is all beaming and has her hopes up - that was just cruel and unbearable to watch. No wonder she lost it and beat the crap out of the guy. The sense of betrayal was just too overwhelming.

I don't think that you have any basis to assume that her mother was married to the asian in question, nor that Stephanie merely had a kid with a black guy ( as opposed to having had a child while married to an African-American).

reply

The little girl looked like she was half Asian, half black. So I believe that.
But Stephanie must really look like her father, as she looked nothing like her mother.

reply

she's probably a communist too.

A woman in control of her sexuality gets called a whore. How very 21st century.

reply

Haha. Well...if it weren't for the kid which she creepily involved with some man she doesn't even bother getting to know then I wouldn't call her that. Anyone who truly believes there is nothing at all wrong with her behavior where the kid is involved has some issues. I'm not saying everyone must label her a whore like I do but seriously...acting that way with her child involved is just gross and awful. She's a woman "in control of her sexuality." Hilarious.

It wasn't me who was murdered, was it?

reply

You're just mad that she isn't a housewife whose sole purpose is to cook for her man.

She's a single mother with an outgoing personality who likes to go out and have fun. Big deal.

Do you happen to live in the middle east?

reply

no no no. sorry. it is a BIG deal, fede_8.

and before you go and write me off as "just mad" about something, let me first say i'm a single mother who really does enjoy having fun. (and no man to cook for.)

there isn't an excuse in the world to bring that kind of irresponsibility around your child. as a parent, you don't get to do that. it has nothing to do with being middle eastern, either, whatever the hell that's supposed to mean; it has everything to do with being a stable, thoughtful parent.

parents of all stripes- married, single, widowed, what have you- are allowed to have fun, and women absolutely SHOULD be in control of their sexuality, but it isn't in control to *beep* a man on the first date. it isn't in control to then have him involved in your kid's life within the first week of "dating." it's incredibly confusing to children to have their parent's partners coming and going in their lives, and let's be honest, after one week, you really don't know if that person is going to stay or go.

besides this, unconsciously or consciously, stephanie is role-modeling behavior for her daughter: one-night stands are empowering! you too can be lied to by someone you hardly know! the way to deal with your own carelessness is to break someone's nose! smoking pot with your friends is better than attending to your child's needs! it's no big deal when a "father-figure" suddenly appears and then disappears out of your life!

don't get me wrong, the stephanie character is a human being with flaws, like the rest of us, and i love the movie for its flawed characters, but if someone doesn't want to take on that kind of selfless responsibility, they don't need to have kids. otherwise, it really doesn't wash to say that it's no big deal to behave so carelessly with your children involved.

I don't have a problem with Stephanie hopping into bed with Jack so quickly (why shouldn't women like to get laid just like men do), but I do have an issue with her getting her duaghter involved with a man she's only known for a couple days. Of course that pales in comparison with Jack jumping into bed with multiple women just days before he is getting married.

reply

Not to mention coming home drunk with a couple of guys she just met, screwing one of them while her daughter is sleeping in the next room and smoking marijuana in her daughter's presence. Yeah, Stephanie was a sleazebag.

reply

Stephanie is probably the least complex character in the film, and if you strip away the facade and expectations of stereotype, very easy to understand. Take away that she's Asian, tends bar at an upscale winery, and lives in trendy California wine country, then what you end up with is trailer trash. If the movie was set in the rural south, involved beer instead of wine, and she was caucasian, there would be no doubt as to what she was about.

Her friendship with Mia must also be viewed as an aberration, as the two have little in common, other than that they're both single and like wine. A truer indication of Stephanie's background and upbringing is to observe her mother.

What seals the deal with Stephanie, is the common tactic among those of her social class, of resolving personal conflicts with violence. In her case, somewhat extreme violence. After getting patched up, Jack should've gone straight to the police and had her arrested.

reply

"...Jack should've gone straight to the police and had her arrested."

No, Jack would not have done that because then his fiancé would surely know what went down. Also, I got the impression that Jack's soon to be Father In Law could also make things very bad for him if he knew he had wronged his daughter.

reply

She's a sleazy hippie. Look at the pigsty she lives in.
