Me and my dad were watching this last night and he got really ticked at the ending. I liked it though. He was going to die no matter what, he just could not fit into society. But, the doctor gave him a chance and he redeemed himself. Basicly his life got to be a Sad Story with a Happy Ending.

The happy ending is that his "life flashing before him" is marked with happy thoughts of the doctor and his girlfriend, which contrasts with the lethal injection flashback sequence. The doctor gave him a life he could be proud of. He didn't die angry at the world; he died wanting to live.

I fully agree. I hate to see the protagonist die in the end, but he did die in a positive sense.

The message? Human beings have an infinite capacity to change themselves! Can't anyone see this? This film moved me nearly to tears (the corny last 20 seconds shut that off right quick though).
shareWhat I thought during that closing sequence, which was very sad, is that some people never have a fighting chance in life. They are locked in a vicious circle of violence and criminality, and they can never escape this, no matter what. So, although the ending is sad, it is close to reality.
sharei agree that humans can change, if they put their mind to it. as former basketball coach doug collins said, "the mind is everything". now, your core personality may attempt to confuse the process of change, but if people work hard at ignoring former beliefs, it can be done.

I wanted the ending to be ultimate happy.... get the girl... live a good life somewhere far away from where anyone would KNOW him.
But ... this was, I guess, more realistic.

No one has touched on something I feel is profound. He came to look up to and respect the doctor who in turn had faith in him. The only other person he had looked up to in his life had been taken from him at the age of 10.
He told the doctor, "it was you", Not much of a clue I admit. This was not one of those films where they spoon fed you the premise but let you make up your own mind. Perhaps they believe you will understand it better from coming to this conclusion on your own. I have not seen this premise reflected in these boards, so there it is for your consideration.
