Sorry, I could excuse maybe Dafoe's character having a girlfriend that young, but not Dafoe and Liotta IN THE SAME MOVIE.

I spend time in New York City, Toronto, Los Angeles, etc., and NO sorry to say, but it's NOT the norm to see women 20 years younger than the guys they are with.

You frequently do see older men with younger women, in real life, but studios pair them this way CONSTANTLY. Even out-of-shape, older men get hot babes. It's a double standard.
I recall, in the 80s, telling people, that the women who played Paul Newman's leading ladies, in the 50s, were, in the 80s, playing the mothers of his leading ladies.

Dafoe's charecter... yes, I noticed the difference.... and especially since she worked with him.. he should have known not to trust her.
As for "JOE" and Rodriguez's charecter.... I don't think that looked strange at all. Ray Liotta is young looking.... and his charecter was obviously starting over.... like she wanted to do since she had such problems.
I have had this movie for quite a while, but just got around to watching it last night. I liked it a lot.

I didn't even notice with Liotta and Rodriguez. She didn't seem like a superficial character and I believed them as a couple. Withb Dafoe and the younger woman, he was playing a succesful doctor so it didn't seek jarring.

A man's earning power peaks at about 45, and a woman's reproductive power peaks at around 25, so 20 years is pretty much the ideal spread. Couples who are close in age are engaging in an abomination close to incest. True, this agrees with men's instincts more than women's because in earlier times a man peaked (and died) earlier, but civilization advanced, and the propensity for women to choose men in the wrong age-group causes fertility and libido conflicts since their timelines don't match.
