Episode 3 (Australia)

After watching the series for a second time, I was struck by how beautiful an episode this was. Anybody who has been in love cannot fail to sympathize with both Leckie and Phillips, particularly Leckie who is 'dumped because you think I'm going to get killed'.

Anyway, I was surprised how much I got out of this episode considering there is no combat - a lack of character development has been the commonest stick with which to beat The Pacific, but I felt that this episode more than any other really had me caring about the feelings and emotions of the characters.

The emptiness and agony of loves lost combined with the dread and resignation of returning to combat was, I felt, portrayed very powerfully.

Any thoughts?

Certainly added some depth to the series, probably more so for me because I live in Melbourne and some of the scenery is very familiar to me.

That said, there were some unique parts which were unrelated to combat and I found the diversion worthwhile. I don't see how they could cover so much ground without referring to how they spent their leave. It's all part of military life in general and the war in particular.
