How can they say at the end of the film that the movie was in way based on actual events or people....when they say they read about those scuba divers and that's where they got the idea from????

I think they said that because everything else besides the lost divers was made up. Since no one was with them while they were stranded there was no way of knowing what happened to them or how long they lived, so it was loosely based on true events or inspired by true events, basically meaning the plot of the lost divers is all they got from the story.
