Why didn't she recognize?

There is one thing that irritates me everytime. Dolores Jane Umbridge does not just dislike Sybil Trelawney, she doesn't really seem to know her. Miss Umbridge is a big bug in the ministry for magic. Miss Trelawney must be a legend in the ministry for making at least one important prophecy that's held by the ministry. How is this possible?

reply

I think there's a good chance, seeing as Voldemort couldn't even find out what the whole prophecy was he only knew the part that Snape heard, that she didn't know much about the prophecy if anything at all. It seems that not too many people would have known about it had Snape not been listening at the door and blabbed to Voldemort when Trelawney made it. If it was that well known, Voldemort shouldn't have had a problem finding out what it was.

Even if she did know a little about it, Umbridge doesn't seem to have much faith in divination and probably thought it was bogus. This isn't in the movie, but Dumbledore mentions in the next book that many of the prophecies in the hall of prophecies never came true. Voldemort brought the prophecy on himself by panicking and self-fulfilling it.

Dumbledore didn't even really have much trust in divination, he only had Trelawney hired at Hogwarts to keep her safe from Voldemort.

Since Trelawney herself has no memory of making the prophecy, I suspect only Dumbledore knows that she said it.
