In the opening scene him and Harry are running toward the underpass side by side. Reasonably-athletic-looking Radcliffe is at a near-sprint, yet the overweight Dudley actor is somehow able to keep pace with him. How was this possible to film?
(it also makes no sense in-world, as Harry should have left him in the dust or deliberately ran slowly so Dudley could keep up)
Harry Melling (who plays dudley) was actually wearing a fat suit during the movie. In real life he's very tall thin and athletic now. (From what i have learned via IMDb trivia regarding the series, he apparently lost a lot of weight in between sorcerer's stone and chamber of secrets and kept getting thinner the older he got). So its possible this attributed to his ability to run so fast.
He was thinner, but looking at his face you wouldn't call him "thin". I'm sure they were able to edit short runnimg segments together to look like he ran the entire time.

shareWe only see a few seconds of them running. A person who's fat but doesn't necessarily suffer from physical ailments that would keep them from running beyond the weight itself, can do short sprints. Additionally, when filming, the speed is under control since they need to capture it in a way that would look good on screen. Actors are often given near-exact speed ta which to run and walk in such movies.
If Dudley's actor was really fat and in bad shape, it might have taken a bit, but it would not really be impossible.
In a movie you could have a real fastest runner in the world vs an average person who doesn’t run that often, and the two of them can be made to look like equals. It’s really not that complicated.
As for Dudley the character, sure it’s likely Harry slowed down because he wouldn’t be the kind of person to leave anyone (not even Dudley) behind. But Dudley, in all likelihood, was able to run that fast because he was... scared shitless!
Because he was scared shitless at something he didn't know what it was. That will make a mother f__ker run fast.
