The one thing I never understood about this movie (Mrs.Mccormick)

I've seen this movie many times, probably more than i can even count, and yet as many times as I've seen it, I've never been able to figure out one thing. Did Neil's mom what he was doing? I always look for some signs or hints that she knows what her son does when he leaves the house, but I have never got a single one. You guys tell me, am I just always missing something, or does she really not know

The book hints that she knows what he's up to and what happened to him, but avoids talking about it. I think it's kind of obvious in scenes like the one where she asks, "Are you wearing cologne?", and Neil changes the subject. There's a really tense, split-second hesitation there.
