Do divorced women on alimony REALLY get additional expenses paid?

Whenever Judith demands Alan to pay for all kinds of stuff she should pay out of her alimony and child support payments (AAA service, Jake's clothing, Jake's food, her lawyer's fees, you name it) and demands their lawyers fight it out to force Alan to submit (I guess only since he cannot afford a lawyer anymore), is that 100% overblown BS or actually based on fact?

I mean I cannot imagine it being so funny and recurrent if it was 100% BS, which is terrifying to me (I'm deciding whether I should get married, going over all the ways I could get screwed legally if the marriage ever goes sour).

Crap, that sucks!!!!

A court would never order anybody to pay their ex so much that they're more wealthy then themselves. It was just a plot device to set Alan up to need to live with Carlie for life. Plus alimony isn't even that common.

I disagree, it happens all the time, men having to support ex-wives, who usually keep the house, furnishings, car, etc..

I know divorced guys who have to live in tiny apartments so that their exes & the kids get to live the good life without the woman having to work.

It's amazing to me that men still get married.

You wish that were the case. Do not get married. Especially if you have a good job and live in Canada.

In Canada, "your ability to pay has no relation to your obligation to do so". Therefor, you have a wife of 8 years, you have a great career that pays you say, $150,000 a year. You get divorced. Your support payments will now be based off of $150,000 a year for eternity.

Did you just lose your career? and a year later you're making a modest, but still liveable $70,000? That's great, you still owe the original $50,000 a year support agreement for eternity. There is no lowering it.

Ain't marriage great?

That's absolutely awful! Maybe one day men will wake up and realize marriage has no real benefits for them.

Believe me I'm definitely not rushing into it. Just saw last week how a co-worker (Python developer) told us about how he proposed to his girl (she told him beforehand that if he ever proposed, just give her a check for what he planned to spend on the ring). I could picture the tramp counting the zeroes on the check before accepting the proposal (and this idiot waiting on his knees for her to make up her mind)...

Alimony is actually pretty rare. It varies by state but unless the guy makes a lot of money, has all sorts of assets & the woman didn't work the guy is usually protected. Of course having a pre- nup helps. But alimony is rarely an issue in divorces. Child support is another thing.

reply

it isnt rare at all. my ex wife very nicely, refused alimony. from my pension and 401k i paid out 340k..her attorney fought her and said "he owes u another 850 per month on top of that.....forever....thank god my ex refused. i would have been completely bankrupted....but it turned out ok.

Yes I know it's just a tv show, but it really bothered me how Judith charged Alan for just about everything, even though he was obviously hard up and it was her who filed for divorce.

that bothers me to sinces alan was actually good to both judith and jake . he did right by both of them . it was also asburd that alan had to pay alimony to both kandi and judith since it was them that wanted the divorce and when i look at it alan really didn't do anything to them. like i said he was good to both of them , they were the ones being bitches.

Part of Alan's original divorce settlement included some highly unusual requirements (dry cleaning expenses for life, I think a holiday home somewhere) because Charlie got involved with the lawyer and messed her around. Alan did say he was going to get a different lawyer to renegotiate, but I don't remember if anything ever came of that.

That wasn't Charlie's fault. It was Alan.As soon as he heard his lawyer make the first suggestion for him to pay instead of trying to reduce the expenses,he should have asked for the meeting to be put on hold till he gets a lawyer who will search his best interest, work for him...No one would sit and do nothing when they see cleartly that their lawyer is bringing them down instead of helping them.I mean seriously paying for judith's vacations among other things?

I don't take this show seriously, if this was real life then Alan would have grounds to sue his lawyer for all the damages but since this is a TV show none of that happened.

HEY KIDS, DON'T GET MARRIED!!!!!!!

Any guy planning on marrying should take a look at 10 random men ten or fifteen years older than them. See how there married lives turned out. I would bet 8 of 10 were divorced for whatever reason. The stories of lost assets, lost houses, lost retirement funds, custody battles. Some poor fools do it more than once expecting a different outcome.

I would sooner hack off my testicles with a rusty fishing knife.

Read a little. Prenups rarely do anything. Especally if you start a successful business or land a decent job after you're married. If you buy a house after you're married, she'll get it or you'll have to sell it and split the equity. If there are kids involved chances are she'll get lead custody, and she'll keep the house, and you'll still be paying the mortgage while living in a studio apartment.

Yeah. People are going to be posting that I'm an ass and it couldn't be further from the truth. But take a look at 10 reasonably successful men that got married. Odds are they've gone through this...Or eventually will.

Every case in real life is different.

The case of Judith is not based on reality.

In effect the court gave Judith every freaking thing that Alan owned and ALL of his income and that would never happen. As well she couldn't just walk over every time and say pay this bill. Alan didn't have any money anymore other than a little spending cash which apparently was VERY little.

In one episode it shows that Alan in 6 years had only been able to save 5 grand which was basically less than two months alimony.

When there was no more alimony to be paid Alan should have had about 4 thousand a month take home. For some reason the writers over looked that nice little income while still making Alan look broke. Never understood that since Charlie saw what the amount was in the last check episode.

As well no court would let Judith get away with spending child support on her personal things while screeching at Alan too bad now buy Jake what he needs she is spending that money anyway she dmaned well pleases.

It was highly unrealistic the court would give Alan for all intents and purpose absolutely nothing. More likely it would be 50/50 plus child support. Thus Alan would have had at least around 2000 a month to use as his own.

BUT hey it's TV.

After Charlie left I watched a total of maybe 30 minutes of all the last seasons. They were just awful and the ratings proved it as the seasons went by. After Kelso did Ashton EVER do anything that justified his paycheck?
