Most important question

Why was there a tent on the middle of the road?

reply

A good question, and one that people view differently.

Importantly, it wasn't a tent, it was clearly a mound that was covered.

Some people are of the opinion (and they say 'fact' that they have researched, or know from personal experience) that this is a commonplace thing in rural Korea, where produce from the fields that can not be taken away immediately is covered with a large cloth/tarp to protect it overnight. The farmer returns the next day and removes it.

Others point to it being a symbol of death.

The director made a conscious choice to include the image, so it has to symbolize something.

me.

Oh really?

Are you going to suggest what it could have symbolised?

Couldn't it have been to show that they were driving through rural Korea, not urban Korea? Why does everything that is unexplained have to be symbolic of something else?

It symbolizes the grave and death. If you watch as many K-dramas as I do you will note that in many of them the characters go visit the graves of dead relatives and the graves are elevated mounds of earth, not dug into the ground like in America.

Well, i dont know about rural Korea, but where i live farmers do indeed cover unhauled produce and especially hay in clothe for protection. in some cases they leave it there for a long time before they haul it away, so in autumn if you drive on more rural roads you can see similar looking things all over the fields.

This explanation seems to make the most sense to me, also.
