Don't you think the men would have been all over those girls? They had been stuck at the fort for a long time and they must have had "urges". Who else thinks the men would have tried to take advantage of the girls instead of just beating them?
shareThe head guy who's wife was killed, and son infected had control over the men. He was a moral guy who respected women.
The other men did show attraction to the women, but knew they would be killed if they raped them. There was no loose justice system as there is today.

shareI think they believed they were connected to the creature besieging the fort, in ogther words devils, if I remeber correctly, the preacher says something to this effect
shareThe preacher does say that the fort has been in the grip of the devil for two months and they walk in, and was suspicious of them.
When the girls enter the fort the Sergeant Major says to Cormac who opened the gate thet they were not to open it to anyone they did not know.
