Best Penn performence by far !

This movie got great reviews, but it seems nobody saw it. It would be a huge
travesty if Penn is not nominated for this performence. He is better in this
than he was in Mystic River. After awhile, I started to forget it was Sean
Penn, and you really get into Sams psyche. From scene to scene it's a mental
decent, that comes off as real. And that is the performence. It's as if he was
really having a break down while shooting the scenes. Acting doesn't get more
better than that. I kind of thought Penn was a tad over rated. Real good, but
not in the leaugue of the kings, and the theater greats, but this work blew me
away! it's sad great stuff like this lasts about 3 weeks in the theaters, with
no real hype or muscle behind it, yet we keep seeing crap like Dukes of Hazzard
type stuff that makes more than 20 million in it's first week. I hope something
for this movie will get nods come award season. It deserves it.

He won't get nominated because it was released -- for whatever reason -- right after Christmas! I agree this is a great film but you're wrong in that a lot of people are seeing it. I saw it on the imdb top rental list for like 2 months after it came out and it made big numbers for an indie film. I also read how it's been doing big business overseas. It's a great one and Penn's performance deserves an oscar. But maybe he'll win one of the British oscars since it got released later overseas?

I agree. I think that hands down this is his best performance.

I don't think you can rate Penn performances in order because I think they're all flawless. I especially like I Am Sam, Dead Man Walkign and The A. of R.N. though...

^^^^ I agree w/ chord6boy.
You can't really compare or put Sean's performances in order or up against
each other because whatever he portrays, his portrayal is REALISTIC, GRITTY, EMOTIONAL, FLAWLESS, etc. etc. etc.

Just bought this to add to the collection, and I saw it again, and I think his performance is rivitng. One of a very few times I forgot I wasn't watching an actor, but bought into that I was watching Sam Bicke. I think he is better in this than in Mystic River. Just my opinion. That scene of him sitting there in the Showroom, at work, where he's totally frustrated and he's starting to lose the plot, is sublime. You feel that frustration.
