Yes they dated for a while, once McGee flat out told Bishop that he and Abby dated each other in the past...I forgot which ep it was called but by that time Abby had already dated Burt for about 2 months, and we learned about Abby's "2-month rule" in that ep that she only dates guys for 2 months maximum. During a scene when McGee, Bishop and Tony were in the men's toilet, McGee explained the rule to Bishop and told her that he used to date Abby, and it was implied that their relationship also only lasted for about 2 months...and during the rest of the ep McGee tried to convince Abby to not give up on her relationship with Burt and abandon her silly 2-month rule.

no they didn't actually show the period of them dating but it doesn't mean it didn't happen, they did date, they just didn't show it in the show...they don't put too much emphasis on dating relationships on this show.

that is what I thought but I wanted to see if I had missed anything since I recently caught up with the show intentionally not watching some of the episodes of season 11.

well there were some little random hints that implied they were dating, but they never showed them outright going on a date or act lovey dovey together like a couple normally would...there were only ever just little implications before that scene when McGee straight out told Bishop that they dated in the past.

One of the hints was when Abby was being stalked and she stayed at McGee's apartment. She needed a toothbrush and McGee told her that hers was still in the bathroom. This creeped her out.

There was also a conversation between Abby and Kate about her relationship with McGee that made it seem like Abby was upset because McGee was trying to define their relationship as more serious than it was.

There was a time that they were aboard a ship, and one of the crew said that he knew someone who dated "hot" Abby, and the timeline showed that it was around the same time that she and McGee were (loosely) together.
