except for

carnie, boy george, vince & jon lovitz none of these people are REAL celebrities - they're just wealthy personalities, some have famous backgrounds, but as i understand the word CELEBRITY, just those four have had hollywood success - am i right or crazy ???

reply

i hope vince or boy george wins and who are some of these people only heard of a few such as vince with motley crue, boy george from culture club, carnie wilson from wilson philps and well i cant really think of anyone else who i would say is well known

Trump version stretched for celebrity status as well. I can loosely see some retired athletes being celebrities. I can't by reality show personality as a celeb.

Jon Lovitz people would know from SNL and comedy movies (he was one of the best characters in A League of Their Own, just hilarious). Most of the others are "celebrities" in finite terms. E.g., I know Matt Iseman because I happen to like American Ninja Warrior and I know of Carson Kressley because my cable service in the early 2000s included the channel that had Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. But people like the gal who's a YouTube celeb or one of the many "Real Housewives" yes, "celebrity" in the broadest sense of the word.

You can tell a lot about a person from reading his biography.

But what you know as a "celebrity" will differ from someone else.

I've no idea of the sports stars or the ninja warrior presenter but I know Carrie Keagan and Carsson Kressley from seeing them on Craig Ferguson's show.

As someone said, it's to make the show appeal to a broader audience than just fans of film (or indeed sports / music alone)

Celebrity does not just apply to Hollywood. There are sports celebrities, You-Tube celebrities, music celebrities, etc. The point is to have someone from as many of these groups, so that more variety of people will watch.

^^ This is the best I've heard it explained.

You're incorrect, being a celebrity doesn't mean you have to have success in Hollywood. Celebrity literally just means "a well known person". For me personally, the sports celebrities are bigger names than the musical celebrities you listed. Eric Dickerson is a hall of fame NFL running back from almost 30 years and holds records which stand to this day. Lisa Leslie is a pioneer in her sport and a literal living legend. "Celebrity" is definitely a relative term. Someone who might be super famous to me could be someone who you've never even heard of.

People post this EVERY year CA is on. Come on people, do you honestly think they're going to be able to get A-list celebs to do this show?

reply

Be grateful even for your D-list celebs.
The new season of Celebrity Big Brother UK just started today & apart from one of these "celebs", I don't recognize a single one of them...AND I'VE LIVED HERE FOR A DECADE!

You're a tool if you don't know the great James Cosmo, he's been around for decades. A fantastic actor and an actual celebrity.
