Spike, don't embarrasse yourself. You are a good director and you don't have anything to prove. Oldboy is a modern classic and a reimagining will only prove that hollywood has nothing new to offer. Remakes, sequels and reboots, cant you guys give some young bloods a chance and maybe we'll get more originallity and gems like the origional Oldboy. Absolutely nothing will be gained from this.
Oh My God? Maybe you need to open your mind a little? You really can't watch ANY film that's not in English OR is in Black and white??? You're missing a lot, dude. By the way, Sin City is a real masterpiece. For that alone, you're missing out on a hell of an experience.
I don't find him racist but he is obsessed with the race row. No doubt Oh-Dae Su will be imprisoned because he was racist to a black protagonist 20 years ago. I'm so skeptical about the remake tbh. I'm not against remakes at all. Some have been better than originals. But my problem is when a beautiful movies will little flaw nor error is remade, it doesn't need remaking, it's fine the way it is. You wanna see it in english there is a dubbed version. Albeit a *beep* awful dub but hey, if you can't be bothered watching it the way it's intended then it's not my problem.
Sticking Feathers up your butt does not make you a chicken.. Tyler Durden
LOL, I can actually see that as the reason he got imprisoned. He will probably try to make it much deeper but in the end its probably going to be about a white guy tormenting a black guy!
And I agree with you, there is nothing they can improve to make it a better movie. The first one had everything really.
Considering how both the antagonist and protagonist are white (Sharlto Copley and Josh Brolin) I doubt there's going to be any racial subtext with the characters.
It's called projection, THAT POSTER IS OBVIOUSLY the RACIST.
Notice nobody else brought race into it, until he did projecting his race hate unto Spike Lee. Sure characteristic of a whiny loser blaming his white privilege for all his problems. Boo effin hoo.

By your own definition that makes you a racist, right? It's obvious you are an angry hate filled person but that's probably just part of your culture.

Racist or not, Spike Lee is still a pretty huge douche bag. I'm basing this on seeing him in person once at a school function and seeing him rip a new one to someone who misunderstood the reason for his visit.
Too true, particularly as Spike is a master in his own right. And I say that even though I am generally anti-yank, and a xenoPHILE to boot - ie. giving reverence to this *beep* equally the best cineaste ever... Spike Lee is one of the best yank film directors ever. Then again, he also went soft, Nationalistic, and lost his fantastic messages, (hence a decent chunk of his style), post Sept. 11, 2001.
The funny thing is that trans-continental remakes have been done since dawn of the motion picture. Some stories are too great to NOT plagiarise. Yes PLAGIARISM. If you submit an essay in college, which was translated from a foreign's student's original idea, then you are plagiarising.
Does that mean the new translation/adaptation cant be any good? NO. Does that mean the director should be applauded for his "daring" film? NO.
Ill definitely watch the Oldboy remake, because thats all it is: a remake.
Just like ill watch the "Lives of others" remake (if its still a real thing).
Stating that its for a wider audience is utter nonsense. Its called "subtitles" and it works very well. I might be that some target audiences (uneducated hollywood moviegoers, who want BOOM! OWW! POW!) have 0 tolerance for foreign films, but I watched this when I was 15 and neither English, nor Korean are my mothertongues. I loved this film and its still in my top 10. Why cant so many people appreciate that art transcends language?
So again, Ill watch this plagiarism, but It wont be as good as the original. They never are.
The biggest problem for me regarding remakes is that some people end up seeing them first and THEN get intrigued enough to watch the original which is by that time of course ruined for them. To me Oldboy is a work of art, uniquely Korean and I can't think of anyway that Hollywood could improve on it. At best it could be 'not disappointing.' and even that is unlikely. I might be close minded but there is no chance I will be seeing the remake.
The way i found the original abre los ojos movie,is by having watched the remake vanilla sky first. Abre los ojos was obviously much better, but still if it wasnt for vanilla sky,i wouldnt never have discovered the original movie,at that time. So i am just saying, for average movie watchers, this remake could be a link to also start watch the original oldboy of 2003.
And even if spike lee makes an horrible movie,we still have the original oldboy!
