At the end ODS is hypnotized to forget he was her father That's a funny ending and he has a cute young GF haha.

shareTo quote Park Chan-wook, it's either a sad ending that's happy or a happy ending that's sad.

I love that level of uncertainty that goes on in this ending as opposed to the remake where he locks himself back up in the hotel room, almost like getting away scott free.
They're called balls, Spike Lee. Grow some!

This film had a lot of balls, I give it to you, but what it needed was some brains!
shareIt's a good ending because we just can't tell if it's a happy ending or not. Usually in a movie when the hero ends up with the girl at the end it's a happy ending but he ended up with his daughter. So is incest a happy ending or is it a sick ending?
shareYeah, I agree. But you know it seems obvious, but people always seem to forget it's just a movie, not real-life. The whole premise of the movie is wonderfully absurd, so why take the incest totally seriously? I'd get more offended that he ate a live octopus because that seems to have been REAL. (And daughter or not, what girl would have anything to do with you after you did that?)
In real life there's no such thing as a happy ending anyway--unless you're getting really special massage.

The only happy thing about the ending is that his daughter is unaware of the incest involved. For her the love remains as pure and untainted as the snow that falls around her.
shareFor for an Asian Drama, its definetly happy ending, usually stories like this end up with everyone being dead >.<
But the ending did take me abit by surprise, honestly i expected, after he found out she was his daughter and that she was hypnotized aswell, and after he went to the hypno chick in the snow i though hed ask her to make him forget her totally, so he wouldnt be able to do her any more harm instead he takes the perv way out, forgetting he is her father to basically keep banging her
To quote The Simpsons
Homer: "Marge, I'm confused. Is this a sad ending or a happy ending?"
Marge: "It's an ending, that's enough"
:D No seriously, that quote is perfectly apt to Oldboy...its an ending that's neither depressing or happy. It's somewhere in the middle.
I like your post, Daniel!
George Lucas talking about: 'Hey, give it to me, I'll fix it. I'll make 20 more of them'
Marge Simpson: "It's an ending. That's enough."

I find it a heartbreaking ending.. Especially when you think back to the innocent man he used to be and now he's broken.
shareWhen was he innocent, at the beginning of the movie?
shareMeaning, he was guilty of no crime other than excessive drinking and fighting with his wife & everyone else in the vicinity.
It's always after I lose things that I realize how very significant the things I've lost are.
Did you even watch the movie?
He was guilty of much more. Remember his captor's sister?
Yes, we all did. And the poster before me asked about the man's innocence "in the beginning of the film".
But I'm not sure you did or even remember the facts. His captor's sister? She committed suicide. He committed no crime. One day he just saw the sister and followed her and "accidentally" chanced upon her meeting with a boy, who was later revealed as her brother, who he (the protagonist) had no idea about. If you think he did a crime, it was him "accidentally" telling his loser friend about what he saw, which was why the captor killed him (the friend) brutally because the friend realized the truth and put 2 and 2 together. That's why, when the protagonist was asking for details regarding the captor, he asked his friend's ex-girlfriend and she remarked, "you should know" but he didn't remember because, for him, it was a random incident and he had no idea who the guy was. When the friend started telling everyone, and when the girl realized she was pregnant, that is when she killed herself and asked her brother to let her fall.
The protagonist was innocent.
It's always after I lose things that I realize how very significant the things I've lost are.
But Lee-woo Jin held Oh-Dae Su responsible for the death of his sister because of his tongue starting the rumour that led to Lee Soo-ah believing she was pregnant (she wasn't).
I'd say that Oh-Dae Su doesn't think he's an innocent man either. When he is asked who might have done this to him he lists around 10 people so it's clear he had a lot of enemies and was not a charming fellow.
Well if you don't have at least 10 names to put on the "potential people to lock you up for years list" you need to get out and live a little more friend. :)
ODS was manipulated into thinking he was guilty of much more than he actually was.
He wasn't guilty of anything but MAYBE being a punk kid, then a drunk jackass. He told his friend to keep his mouth shut about it, should he have not said anything? Probably, but can you remember being in grade school? about 70% of kids would have told at least their best friend, like he did, he only told his best friend who in turn threw it everywhere.
You actually think what was done to him was justified? That's insanity. The other guy was not "hypnotized" (the only drawback to this film IMO, as necessary as it was), he actually screwed his sister, intentionally... That's pretty messed up... Then he blames ODS for "killing his best friend"... Well, no pardon me sir, but you just killed him. You can spin yarn all day long about 'butterfly effects' and chain reactions but at the end of the day the guy who pulls the trigger is the murderer.. At most you are an accessory and in this case ODS was only guilty of removing the bug from himself, what would you do.
Like I said in a different post, he should have cut the guys throat the first chance he got, the "why" he got put in prison should have been irrelevant. As he scanned his memory for all the things he did wrong, if any one of them even came close to warranting a 15 year sentence he more than paid his dues, i'd have killed the guy first chance, no further questions... That's just me though.
