OK, who was he supposed to be? A detective or something? What did he mean when he said to Costa that he had something he wanted? I must have missed something.

Nevermind. Stupid me, I hadn't finished the movie yet. :P Now I know who he was.

They said he was a drug addict art thief. He supposedly sold something to Hawks character and wanted the money for it.

Yeah they said his name was Hart, and Costa (as Asher) owed him $80.000, so he framed him.
