Questions About the Mother - Martin Relationship

Did she know that Martin was periodically returning to the room?
Was Martin locked up down there after his brother died & was Martin responsible for the twin's death?
If Martin was so outraged at his mother, why wait for a chance encounter at the hospital to kill her? After all, all his previous murders made some sense and most were well planned. It would have made more sense for him to not kill her, after all he did want her approval & he wasn't just some sadistic killer. Since he was periodically returing to her house, he had ample opportunity to kill her.

I think she knew Martin was returning to the room. Thats why Jolie said she was hiding something. Martin was definitely responsible for his brother's death, and his mother knew it. She covered that up with the cops. I guess he killed her then, because the cops were getting closer and closer to him. Before that he was just doing whatever he wanted to do. And as the mother went to the cops and told them she saw her son, she was keen on identifying him soon. Thats why he killed her then.

If she went to the police to report seeing her son on the ferry, then why would she be shy about reporting him for breaking into her house? And when he killed her near the end, it was pointless, he was already exposed and his mother couldn't have stopped him.

She knew he was coming home, but she didnt know when I guess. He might have been using a different entrance. Or she probably didnt know he was coming in at all, which could be reason why she didnt report.
He was not exposed when he got into the elevator with his mother. He just knew that she was going around trying to identify, and the cops were closing in. He wanted to kill her before she got the chance. He was exposed only when Jolie saw him cutting off his mother's head. Only then they knew it was him.

I don't think she knew he was coming home, and she wasn't trying to hide the fact that he was coming home, otherwise she wouldn't have reported seeing him on the ferry.

She was hiding the fact that she locked him up in the basement when he was a kid.

The basement room looked like he might have been locked up there as an adolescent, which is pretty sick, but he may have done things that made the mother realize that he was very dangerous, as she said to the cops, without knowing he had been killing people after he had run away.
I don't think she knew he had returned. Apparently it's common for serial killers to kill a lot of people before sometimes killing the person they actually hate.
I'm not sure if he was responsible for the death of his brother. However, his mother obviously preferred the brother and probably made him feel really bad that he was the one that survived.
