Totally incongruous scene (Spoiler).
Many find the basement scene scary and rightly so. Scary/meaningless. The scene is totally incongruous to the Film plot. A set up without resolution.

I took it to mean that Martin still wanted to gain the affection of his mother; therefore he stayed close to her without killing her. He, like many killers, had parent issues and in his case was still desperate for her to love him as she did Reese.
shareWhat do you mean? That wasn't Martin under the bed
shareWho else would have been under the bed?
Semper Contendere Propter Amoram et Formam
Who was it then? Pretty sure it was Martin.
shareI agree that it was Martin - who else could it be? But I agree with the OP that it is incongruous in that "Martin" clearly has a larger physique than the actual Martin, so in that respect it is incongruous and was probably inserted into the film for "the shock" value.
