Didn't understand why Angelina knew Martin Asher was the killer

when angelina visited gena rowlands and showed him the photo of the suspect and questioned whether it could be her son or not she said "it could be"

later on angelina is attacked by a mysterious man in the basement of the house (it could be anyone we have no clue). Then later on angelina is saying in front of the department that martin asher had been killing people for 20 years. How did she know Martin Asher was even involved in any of the killings? No one told her this and the mother didnt even give a concrete answer. Also it could have been anyone in the basement, doesnt mean it was asher.

In the room it had martin carved into the wood? Kind of implies that Martin had been in that room even though he was meant to be dead.

The basement room was apparently Martin's old room, and it had matchstick figures of people being strangled, etc. So, it looked like the beginnings of a serial killer.

She didn't know - she was following a lead. When she exhumed Martin's body and it turned out not to be Martin at all she concluded that if he didn't die in that early accident that he he must be still alive and that started the ball rolling of connections...Mother hated him, ran away after stealing jewelry, secret room, etc...He wanted another life so he started "taking" them...
