The main reason this movie doesn't work.

It's because the main character, well, doesn't exist. Jolie's 'character' is a complete cypher. We have no idea who she is or what motivates her in any decision she makes. They spent too much time on the villain and no time on the supposed 'hero'.

I felt the exact same way.

Well to be fair, the way I saw it was that she had no life to speak of. She was married to the job and had no social life.

Remember the scene where she was dining alone in her apartment? That was to reflect her isolation I imagine and one reason she fell for her witness. Her guard was down. Even her boss remarked how she turned down every offer of a date. We didn't see into her life because there wasn't one to remark on. The only snippet we get is of her childhood when she speaks about it in the car to her witness that one time.

I think this was deliberate so we could invest in her sudden emotional attachment to her witness.

Yep. he was pretty good at spotting other peoples insecurities and manipulating them. But whether he was genuinely attracted to her, wanted to throw her off the scent by getting close to her (and subsequently the investigation), or wanted to just get one over on the system I couldn't say. Maybe all three. But he was obviously a psychopath and had no qualms in gloating to her on the phone *beep* you. Or hang on, that's right I did *beep* you" in a very cold and detatched way.

I LOVED the ending! I am guessing she was reinstated after setting the trap and removing him from society!

I think it doesn't work because you never figure out why he wants to kill her babies. That makes no sense to me

He's a narcissist/psychopath/sociopath, he hates her. These people hate others just because--they inherently hate others and want to kill. Also, he hates mothers--and himself.
