UCOCS

I have seen just about every episode to date of New Tricks. (I say "to date" because we are still a couple of episodes behind in Australia). However I never saw the pilot (episode 1.0). I have a question.

Was it ever explained (or referred to) why the acronym for the unit was UCOS when, of course, it should be UCOCS (Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad). Now I know why you wouldn't want people referring to you as UCOCS, but was it ever explained?

If I was a crim being hassled by these people I would always be calling them 'you cocks'. I seem to remember one suspect making that "mistake" in one episode only. But I wonder whether there was a discussion in the first episode along the lines of 'We are calling the squad UCOS to avoid insults'.

I'm in Australia too and have only just watched the Pilot episode. I have watched episodes of New Tricks over the years, but wasn't fanatic enough to watch every single episode in order. I think last year they started to repeat old episodes and I had recorded it and finally watched it. To answer your question, NO they didn't explain the the acronym. If fact Sandra goes to see Jack and says to him 'UCOS', unsolved crime and open case initiative', which doesn't actually fit with the letters! Jack replies 'what did someone call it? Bevan's love child? the unsolved crime and waste of time initiative? Sandra replies 'no, that would be UCOWOTI'. When they enter the office, with a sign 'U.C.O.S.' a note has been taped over it saying 'NUCRAP'. I don't think the name is referred to again. I can tell you where to download it, if you're interested.
