Series 10 and the cast

Given all the change thats been happening recently in new tricks, with James Bolam leaving,Denis Lawson taking over, Amanda Redman and Alun Armstrong set to leave in the 10th series and Nicholas Lyndhurst set to take over from Mr Armstrong i decided that i'd like to know the wide fan opinon of the changes.

Are they a good thing? Are they giving the show a breath of fresh air or has it become stagnant?

For me i loved the 9th series,Steve McAndrew was a great addition to the cast and i loved that Gerry got a lot more to do this series than normal.

I kind of thought that for a while the show had begun to revolve a little to much around Jack Halford with a few episodes revolving around him in the 8th series. Don't get me wrong, i loved the charcater of Jack, but in a way i'm glad that the cast is changing; your getting new characters and with them new relationships and back grounds.

I will admit, however, that some episodes did seem to be more about the case the team were working on rather than the characters themselves in the past few years.
for example
Jack talking to his dead wife, which all but stopped after the fifth series with a "cameo" in the sixth.
Gerry and his wifes, who last appeared in the 4th series and haven't appeared since, the only person from Gerry's personal life to appear has been his eldest daughter, his youngest daughter last appearing in the 3rd series and his middle daughter hasn't appeared since the pilot.

The scenes with Brian and Esther still remain, but they appear in fewer frequency than they used to and aren't always as expansive or funny.

For Brian and Jack, i felt that becuase of this their characters had been exausted somewhat, whilst i feel there is still some more character development to be given with Gerry, I,E the friendship he started up with Steve, as i felt the series did not often focus on him, usually only with an episode devoted to his character.

i also like the expansion that the character of Strickland has been getting in recent years, showing a bit more of a likeable character than he was in earlier series.

For the replacement of Sandra, i think they will need another female lead as it just seems to be right to have a woman in charge of these old buggers.

I have to say that i am really looking forward to Nicholas Lyndhurst joing the team and to see what kind of character he'll play

For me i am personally looking forward to the 10th series of New Tricks and i hope it will be a brilliant step forward.

For me the biggest (and saddest) change in the later episodes was the lack of big names from the 70s and 80s in the supporting rolls. George Cole, Rita Tushingham, Clare Bloom, etc. Time for this once brilliant but now tired dog to end.

The first thing that popped in my mind when I heard Lyndhurst was joining is the two sidekicks from Minder and Only Fools and Horses are now in the same series...

I do believe the show was past its sell by date a few years ago but I have continued to watch it and will give series 10 a chance. Who knows? New characters might bring it a bit of new life.

I'm thinking more of Lyndusrt as Gary Sparrow in 'Goodnight, Sweetheart' and I can see the possibilities. 'Course, he's is only just about fifty so I'd see him more as the new commander than one of the ol' codgers.

With the introduction of Steve McAndrew, it did kind of give more for Gerry to do, and my feeling is the "Scotland episode" was testing the waters, as I can see series 10 being almost a "Sweeney 30 years on" type series, with Steve McAndrew and Denis Waterman setting up almost a "Regan and George 30 years on" type relationship.

Lyndusrt in rock n' chips has showed he can be something somewhat darker and more than just Rodey Trotter (Gary Sparrow is just him playing Roddy Trotter in the episodes after he got married to Casandra), but I can not see him being any more than just another Strikland

Nicholas Lyndhurst? Terrible casting. Maybe it's me, but I can't see him in a serious role - he doesn't have the gravitas for it. It's his appearance, he can't help it.

I used to think that until I saw him as Freddie "The Frog" Robdell in the OFAH spin off (can't remember the name) and my opinion of his talents improved considerably

From what reports are saying, he is going to be replacing Bryan, so that probably means he will be the comic releif character of the group.

Series 10 I feel is going to be the end of the road for New Tricks, so for a one-off series, I think he will do alright, but can not see it being for the long run.

Well young Rodney is certainly going to make many people feel old!

Its that man again!!

Taggart did well despite the tragic early death of it's principal star, Mark McManus, Midsomer Murders seems to be holding it's own..although the jury seems to be out at time of this post, & Coronation Street has lost many major members with no ill effect. The quality of storylines has got a lot worse in the last two series, multiple cast changes aren't going to help matters.
On balance, i think it wise to bring this once great show to a close.

Taggart did ok but really picked up in its final two years. but I don't think this show is going to survive so many changes.

I think the biggest impact will be Alun Armstrong leaving. I honestly don't know anyone that can take his place. Then again, I am from the other side of the pond.

Don't quite know the strong female leads either but I agree, she would have to be strong but she can't be the same as Amanda's character. We want individuals who can hold their own otherwise, they may as well just pack it in.

On the other hand, I have seen programs that run over 20 years in Britain. I don't remember them doing it here other than soap operas so you guys must know what you are doing. LOL
