Steve's father's hospital scene...Question!

I really hope someone can help me with this: I watched an episode where the character Steve's father is in hospital and dying. Steve asks him "Why do you hate me?". The father replies (and I swear this is how it sounded ) he replies "I never graded you"
I replayed the scene three times to see if he was actually saying I never HATED you, but it absolutely sounds like he's saying "GRADED". Of course that makes no sense but that's what I heard and whatever he said, Steve looked very surprised by it.
Help!!!

reply

I think he says 'I never rated you son, never'. Which isn't that far off from 'graded', I guess he means that he never thought much of Steve.

reply

Ah, okay thanks. If so, that's a horrible thing to say to him.

reply

Which explains Steve's and his sister's hatred of their father.

reply

Certainly the father did not seem a very nice man. Maybe he disapproved of Steve joining the police. it does happen in real life.

Yes, he said "I never rated you. Never!" I looked this up in the dictionary because I wasn't sure what he meant. This is what I found:

rated: to express reproof; berate, to find fault with.

So, to me it says that the father didn't really hate him, he just had a strange way (or no way) to express a father's love.

My Oxford Dictionary gives a further definition: "estimate the worth or value of", and I've no doubt that this is what was meant in this context.
