This episode was a bit confusing and I had to watch it twice on DVD and am still not sure about something.
Amy believed that the video from ALEC that she found belonging to her father was really happening and didn't realize it was only to be broadcast in the event of a nuclear war? She had no idea that it was a program that her father was part of, and he couldn't talk about it?
From what I recall of the episode the key, and only thing Amy found, was the speech, and while I could be wrong, they never did explain how she figured out her father's role in ALEC - it seems unlikely the speech would have made any mention of ALEC, unless it given specifically to the chosen 600 (why copies were kept is never explained either.) They also didn't explain where the video came from, and not living in Britain I could be wrong on this, but it looked like it was one of those civil defense spots used in schools, possibly televised, during the 60s.
I suppose it's possible her father thought the speech was the only thing Amy saw, and she actually found something else to make the connection. When she saw the packed suitcase she correctly assessed the meaning and assumed the worst was about to arrive.
Amy would have survived, probably with a major hang over, so yes, her death was unnecessary, but also accidental.
Thank you for your reply. Yes, the speech and the video was like a civil defense spot used in schools, but this one was broader than just to the schools. I think it was to be a national project. Amy with her 16 year old brain figured out that her father must somehow be connected to ALEC and the project, but took the project as the reality that something awful was going to happen, when it was really only a practice to prepare people for a serious event.
True, we have to consider her age, although I still think this show often ignores continuity and in episodes like this, don't offer plausible evidence to explain the final result - but like you, I also enjoy watching.
They should have had you in the writer's room. Amy's death would have been more tragic had it been brought on by a practice run, but the episode went to the trouble to establish it was based on a Russian reaction to a military exercise, which meant the threat was real (they should have stuck to the exercise theme.)
