$90,000,000 budget, and only $58,229,120 domestic box office?? Why did I have the impression that this movie did well? And it has like 200,000 votes in IMDB, with 7,4 score, which would suggest that it did fairly well at the box office.
Anyway, I think that 90m. budget is way too much though, for a movie like this. Where did all this money go?
boxofficemojo.com reports that it made $188M worldwide, which gives it the 2X budget usually touted as the measure of profitability. This means it made a small profit during its theater release, and now all ancillary is just continued profit.
Still, worldwide profit twice the budget is not THAT great, because it's not net profit, lot of money go to distributors, theater owners, taxes, etc.. I just thought that the movie had done a lot better in the U.S., since it's an American movie, and it got good reviews. I think the audience sensed that it's not a genuine comedy, it's like a drama comedy, and they don't like this genre very much. Let's see if "Zoolander 2" does better at the box office!
To me, the story seemed to lose its way. But it was interesting that the writer and filmmaker thought it needed more than just daydreaming, and made WM an action adventure type in the real.
And, similar to what you indicated, the problem may have been that the movie was too half and half, and not enough of either a action-adventure, or a daydreaming comedy.
I agree. It was an interesting remake of the old film, but like the locations, the narrative was all over the place. Nice to see the Sean Penn cameo, but Kristen Wiig's appealing character really has little to do during much of the story, whilst Walter heads off to discover himself. It's easy enough to see why the film wasn't a great success.🐭
