It's painful to see myself in this film.
It's hard for me to sit through this movie because I used to zone out like that a lot when I was growing up. It's painful to see myself in this film.

shareDay dreaming is normal for kids. Some have it more severe but it's not really a disease or anything, unless it hinders real life too much. Read more about Maladaptive Day Dreaming. An online community of daydreamers is WildMinds.ning.com.
I am a "light" case myself ;-). I don't see it as a negative trait, sometimes it's something very useful to be creative and productive with or it's entertaining at worst. There can be a lot of moments where you don't have to concentrate on anything (waiting for a train or sitting in it) and those can safely facilitate thinking or day dreaming. People should do it more, really, most people don't have enough imagination, but it's not their fault, we're not encouraged much in that department.
What Walter Mitty has in the movie, zoning out during conversation...I sometimes had that a little, but I just had trouble concentrating on listening and understanding, particularly if somebody talks fast or bores me, I never quite zoned out like he did.
... daydreaming happens to everyone in some time or other, so the original poster shouldn't worry too much with it. There was an interview with some director that I read some time ago who said that an idea for a movie might just start out with a couple of scenes that pop into his head, and then it fleshes out to be something cohesive and coherent. So, this particular film might be referring more to creative inspirational fantasies than a commentary against daydreaming or folks who "zone out" from time to time.
shareI'm an ADD person, so I really relate to Walter nowadays, after 25 years I still zone out and create a situation in my head--and end up missing something or forgetting something in it. But daydreaming is pretty cool. Gives you lots of cool ideas
shareIt's probably why it's one of my favourite films. I can completely see myself in it. That struggle with life. Only working to support your family when your heart just wants to see the world. Completely hits me hard.
