Major Tom

Why is Walter referred to as Major Tom?

reply

Only the Dbag executive in charge of closing Life down calls him that. He sees Walter daydreaming and says "Ground Control to Major Tom.....come in Major Tom" to make fun of him.

Right, I just don't understand the Major Tom reference. Also later in the movie Walter's love interest sings to him as Major Tom in a day dream sequence.

Do you know David Bowie's "SpaceOddity"? That is the song Cheryl sings to him in the dream seguence. You noticed "Major Tom", "Can you hear me Major Tom?" was part of the lyrics.

The Dbag executive is saying "Come in Major Tom" while Walter is daydreaming, kind of like saying "Earth to Walter..." as some people say when addressing someone who is distracted.

That's all. But it does give the tie-in to Bowie's song showing up in one of his daydreams, which is what was intended.

Thanks, an old-timer here, wasn't familiar with the song.

You must be a real old timer - its from 1969. 😃

Ha! Ha! Just wasn't much into David Bowie. I mostly remember him as the star of the movie Labyrinth. My daughter's favorite movie when she was growing up!

I also missed David Bowie when I was growing up; However, I was exposed to Space Oddity when it was recorded by NASA astronaut Chris Hadfield aboard the International Space Station. That video went viral in 2013, the same year as Mitty was released. I don't know which came first though. Would be quite a coincidence if there was no connection.

I thought it had been taken down due to copyright restrictions but maybe they worked out a deal. Here's the link:

Since you're an 'old-timer', he's the guy that sings the beautiful duet "Little Drummer Boy" with Bing Crosby, that we hear around the holidays. Click below..

Also Walter's love interest explains to him that the bearded dbag executive doesn't understand the song: it's about exploring new grounds and leave your comfoort zone, which is what Walter is doing.

reply

I loved that line also because the stiff suit with the bad beard was totally clueless about his choice of words.

reply

Right. I think what's lost in this thread is how Cheryl mentions the guy with the beard had the meaning of the song all wrong. How it is about courage and going into the unknown - a precursor to Walter's adventures.

And him jumping onto the helicopter. This has to be the most "quintessential" scene in the movie.

"Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare. This is Major Tom to ground control: I'm stepping through the door..."

reply

I think that the boss's name of Dream Machine was a better description of Walter's zoned-out moments. Mitty is a real day-dreamer.
