Some things that don't make sense.

Like, why would she need her sister there? Yes, it's explained that Meredith "needed her sister" but if she was having that difficult a time during her visit, why not just leave? Fake an illness or something and just leave. And Julie, she was supposed to be there for "support" and each time Meredith has an issue, Julie just sits there. Yes, she was going to go out to the car when Meredith tried to drive away, but then just sat there and let Ben go out. And at the end, when Meredith is crying and running out of the room, Julie just sits there, does not even attempt to get up and go comfort her or check on her. Most sisters would go to their sister when they're crying that nobody loves them. The one most of all, when Meredith spills dozens of raw eggs on herself and doesn't change her shirt for a whole day? Not only is it unlikely that her uptight character would wear a shirt like that from morning until night, it is unsafe and uncomfortable.

I agree that the sister was not really helping Meredith much.
However Meredith wanted her to be there.
I guess that Meredith had problems by opening up towards strangers that's why she needed a familiar face around her.

It's obvious that Julie is just ashamed and embarrassed by Meredith's behavior in some of the scenes, and that's why she doesn't do much to support her sister. Meredith doesn't know when to just shut up in the conversation with the gay brother. She's really too much. And later when she announces that she's slept with Ben, I think everyone is just stunned.
