Despite the overwhelming hatred for this movie...

on this board, I really liked it.
It's one of my favorites.

I saw a tight-knit family who had learned to close ranks in order to protect each other a long time ago. They are suspicious of outsiders especially when those outsiders are completely different from themselves because for an unseen reason they are afraid of getting hurt.

Both Cybil and Amy said as much after Meredith finally called them on their behavior on Christmas morning.
In the kitchen as they tried to help her clean herself up, she asked, "What's so special about you guys?"
And Amy said, "Nothing...we're not so great."
And Cybil said, "It's just that we're all that we've got."

I also think the swirling animosity also had something to do with sensing that Meredith was not right for Everett.
A fact that played itself out by Meredith getting so drunk with Everett's brother that she thinks she might've slept with him and her younger sister falling for Everett.

The family couldn't have been that horrible...she still ended up marrying into it in the end.

Mmhmm.

On watching The Family Stone again yesterday, I realised that it was actually strata that Meredith made, and not lasagna as I stated. My apologies for any confusion my last post may have made

reply

Because yeah...that's where the confusion about your post is from.
Strata and lasagna.

Mmhmm.

I can't believe there is so much hate for this film. I can't say enough how much I adore it. I've been watching it every holiday season since it was released. I think it's a beautiful film.

I enjoy visiting the boards on this site because it's always interesting what people come here to say. I never would have expected so much hate for this movie but it's here.

reply

I was a little taken aback myself.
It's one of my holiday favorites.
I liked the complexity of the family dynamic, that it wasn't so two-dimensional, so black and white.

It was interesting and funny and multilayered and inspiriting.

I don't totally dislike the movie. I just dislike how a couple of characters are just totally vile. I guess my extreme dislike of them must prove they're good actors.

On another note I usually don't like SJP & I love her in this movie. I see her as a very sympathetic character. So, she has my respect at the very least. :-)

This is exactly how I feel about this movie, though I can see why a lot of people don't like it. For me, it is a great movie because the characters are complex and not entirely likable at all moments. However, by the end, you get an idea of why they are behaving in that way.

I thought it was one of the only movies that let you see how interpersonal relationships are played out within a family dynamic, and more importantly, how a person can be kind and loving to insiders, but not to an outsider.

I will be your Sherpa up the mountain of gayness.

I love this movie, They know they are difficult. Clare Danes is the worst sister ever.

Well at the end you saw the root of why they were treating her like crap and it was because of the mother's illness. Even though she didn't say anything the children were worried about it coming back. I think they sensed it had. Even if the parents/family don't think or feel they love each other or are right for each other that's no excuse for the kind of treatment they put her through. You are respectful to your guest. Hell they talk about how they loved some chick he dated in the past. Thing is how do we know they didn't treat her like they did Meredith and when she was gone out of his life then all of a sudden it's like w love so and so why did you break up with her crap? Yes people really do that mess.

reply

I don't get the hate for this movie at all, I love it, and watch it every christmas.

reply

My family all love this movie too!

Glad I managed to find a positive thread on this board! Too many haters. Yeesh.

I, like the rest of you, really love this movie and I watch it at least a couple of times every Christmas. Sure, it's light-hearted fare, but who cares?! That's what holiday movies are all about.

I saw this movie when it was release, and didn't find it nothing special.
But I catched it again yesterday on tv, and I loved it. It was very sad, and I cried a lot, especially because I lost my mom cause of cancer 2 years ago.
But I think the characters are very real. They are no super good o super evil, they are grey (except maybe Ben) like real persons.

Yes this is so much better than the usual Hollywood crap like It's Complicated and other movies like it. The Family Stone is one of the very best drama/comedy films from Hollywood in the last ten years.

Yeah but they had already made up their mind before she walked in the door. They were peaking out the window making fun of her like a bunch of 3rd graders picking on the new kid. They were that horrible and the perfect ending would've been if they all died in a car crash at the end
