The point of the pregnant sister?
What was the point in having the other sister > Susanna, i think was her name

One of the drawbacks of this film was that it tried to encompass too many social issues. So the characters represented just about every kind of person: the rebel, the gay, the deaf, the black (within an otherwise white family), the bitch, the beauty, etc. Susannah was the one completely normal one of the bunch, and they had to have one of those. Additionally, she provided the means for introducing a child into the mix.
shareHer character was great- clearly the normal one who wasn't SO mean to Merideth!
shareYes the movie covers all the token people, but one of the movie's major plot points was life and death (circle of life)... Susannah brought the means for Sybil to have known a grandchild (with another on the way). The scene where Susannah goes into Sybil's room and lays next to her... there are three generations involved in that one scene... She is holding her dying mother while 'holding' her unborn child. Her character is so subtle, and Reaser does an awesome job bringing the character to the movie and making her believable. Her character the most 'traditional' of the Stone children; Thad was living a neo-traditional life; him and Patrick were in a committed relationship and starting a family, but in the 'traditional' sense Susannah was the character to bring that aspect to the film. Susannah also has the scene with Mr. Stone while she is watching the movie; it brought the heart into the movie. Susannah might not have been most important character in the movie, but she was necessary.
shareSusannah's scene with Kelly definitely brought heart to the movie, and it also led to his conversation with Cybill in the next scene.
Is your point so weak that you must have the last word?
Aww, I adored Susanna. Even though she wasn't used that often, she's still necessary.
shareI agree that those two scenes are so strong. And in the commentary, the writer/director made the point that Susannah and Kelly are close, like how Cybill and Amy are close. Cybill is a stronger personality in the film, but it's nice that there's shades of Kelly's relationship with his kids (Susannah and the movie, Ben on the bleachers).
shareI must have missed something--where was her husband? Were they separated or was he in the military or what?
shareHe doesn't show up until later on Christmas Day, though he is on the phone with Susannah on Christmas Eve. He's also there when they show the following year. At the beginning of the movie, someone asks her where her husband is and she says "What husband?" Meaning that he probably travels on business alot.
shareI think the purpose of Susannah was the being the balanced normal child. She did seemed bugged by Meredith in a couple of scenes.
shareI'm late to this post. but I think Susannah is just showing a kind/neutral type character in the movie, like others have mentioned, she's close to Kelly, and they both have the same personality.
But, I think the point of her being pregnant is to help show the passing of time for that final scene.
What I've been wondering is what ages all the kids are. They all have an impressive array of occupations, which is kinda cool for one family, but I'm wondering if their ages would add further insight into the family.
My impression was that Everett was the oldest, especially since Sybil offered him her mother's ring instead of the other kids, and Amy was the youngest (she seems to be the brattiest). Other than that, I have no idea. Any ideas?
I would put Everett as the oldest also, maybe at about 35. I don't think Susannah is too far behind considering she has a 7/8 year old, so I would put her at 33. Ben and Thad are harder because they both fall in the middle, are the same gender and seem around the same age. I would guess that Thad is older than Ben (just a guess) so let's say Thad is about 30/31. Therefore I'm going to guess that Ben is about 28. He has moved to the west coast and established a career so I would say he had been out of college for about 5 years. That leaves Amy. We know that she's a teacher, so she's most likely a college graduate. I would guess that she's been teaching for a year or two which would put her at about 24/25 and seems to fit with the others' ages. Those are all pure guesses though! It was a fun post to write :)
shareI agree with many of the posts on here, but I also think other than Susannah resembling the "normal" child in the Stone family I think her being pregnant brings on the metaphor with life there comes death. Sybil's life is slowly ending as she dies from cancer while Susannah is bringing a new life into the world. Just my way of seeing it. :-)
I love this movie, it's a Christmas regular in our house.
Two things that go along with this conversation. We have mentioned Susannah's pregnancy, but do we see her child the following Christmas? A big deal is made of Ben's child but I can't remember seeing the new baby.
Second, I've never gotten the point of Susannah's husband working (traveling?) on Christmas Day. I've always felt he was a superfluous character as written, and think he would work better if he was present throughout the movie.
yes, when Thad & Patrick come into the house with their baby, Susannah is sitting on the lounge with her baby :)

Honestly?
So they could have a mother of a young child, to break something of Meredith's. Then Meredith could look like a b*tch (to them) for not being happy about it. Of course if Meredith broke something of theirs it would have been the end of the world.
Too bad Meredith didn't bail on the family. Ugh.
