Unsupportive sister (Danes)

I didn't understand why Claire Danes was so UNSUPPORTIVE of her sister in this movie. She even bails on her on Christmas day, and earlier asks her "why did you ask me to come up here?" Because she's your sister and felt she needed support. Duh.

And you, dear sister, try on the engagement ring her supposed fiance was about to give her, then have the balls to ask HER how she could've (presumably) slept with someone other than her future fiance??

Poor Meredith. She didn't get any support from anywhere. Not even her own family. Just sad.

I have only seen the movie once and maybe the last few minutes on tv, but I hated Claires character. I felt so bad for SJP's character and for her sister to treat hr like that, I hated it. If I had a sister like that, id never talk to her.

Same here. Hated Julie and didn't understand why the family, especially Amy, were fawning all over her.

They fawned all over her because her hair was down and because she was Not-Meredith.

I think Julie tried to explain her sister at the table, but the mother cut her off. But she didnt even go and try to check on her. She wasnt very supportive. Shes more free spirited, and selfcentered from what I gathered. And Meredith was more uptight and reserved.

It's a cringe inducing detail for me every time I watch this film. Meredith reaches out to her sister and then she really shows her no emotional support at all. Even after the dinner scene when Meredeth runs off, Julie just sits there with everyone as if she barely knew her.

ALSO...How does Meredith's SISTER have the BALLS to give in to a relationship with her ex-boyfriend (who was planning to PROPOSE)??? I know she declined at first, but it's not even a full DAY before she runs into his arms! I mean, if she was so torn up about it, she would've/should've STAYED ON THAT BUS!

I understand that things were rocky for Meredith and Everett, but he was thinking of asking her to marry him. You don't just throw those feelings away. I felt so bad for Meredith - they all antagonized her and looked down on her - then her sister shows up and they all LOVE her!?! For what? Falling off the bus??? For not wearing her hair in a bun??? UGH! This family annoyed me so much!

At least until the end when Diane Keaton and Rachel McAdams went to comfort her...

I don't see the sister as unsupportive, I see her as the opposite

The only time I disliked Julie was during the dinner conversation. She could have done something - try to explain what Meredith was trying to say, tell Meredith that the conversation was inappropriate or change the subject. Out of all those people, she should know her sister the best and understand her. But she was just sitting there and after Meredith stormed out, she did nothing to show her support. I know it was a touchy subject and probably she didn't want the family think that she agreed with Meredith but who cares if they did?

Mostly I liked her alright. I am just a bit pissed that such a nice, cool girl had to end up with a boring guy with no balls or personality.
